Stream of honey!

In the year 1983, the ears of the music lovers received a stream of melodies from Maestro Ilayaraja, who presented a unique form of music which was a perfect blend of western and Indian musical forms. He applied this form of music to match every kind of mood that is demanded by situations in Indian films.
Producing innovative tunes and incredible interludes with violins, flutes, guitars etc is a piece of cake for Him. This song from the movie 'Sadma', beautifully rendered by Suresh Wadkar is still the favourite of many.

Remarkable twilight!

One more instance of purity and simplicity. This song reflects the attitude of the people during those days. Minds were less disturbed hence more matured. I remember listening to this song in various radio stations and imagining the beauty of the song. It was when the doordarshan aired the movie 'Humjoli' on one Sunday evening, we could enjoy the clean picturization of the song. Tune was set by Laxmikant pyarelal and the beautiful lyric was by Anand Bakshi. Can’t stop admiring the velvety voices of Rafi and Asha.

Lovely days!

when my mind gets distressed by witnessing the merriment going around over the spurious music by some ignorant and nefarious music lovers, I call to my mind the music that i was brought up with. Instance of virtuousness

To prettify herself is every woman’s birthright. There is more enjoyment when she tries to make herself attractive for her beloved. This soulful and tuneful melody is from the movie Saudagar released in 1973. It is composed by Ravindra jain, who is also the lyricist of this song. His thoughts, and the way he plays with the words is beyond belief. He is a classicist who chose to beautify his tune with Asha’s pleasant voice. The interludes are fabulous. Wonderful treat to the ears!

Dreamy moment!

Where there is Simplicity there is Godliness. Simplicity is one of the fortunes of our country. However, we have started spending it to gain fame and popularity and are trying hard to prettify ourselves with fake modesty. Can’t we be famous yet simple? Alternatively, Can’t we be simple yet famous? This is a big doubt for me.

This Marvelous Melody from the movie Jab Jab Phool Khile is Composed by Kalyanji Anandji and performed by Lata Mangeshkar. It was released in the year 1965 and is one of the favourites of many.

Sound(s) Of Music

Famous classical Greek philosopher Plato, who recognized the importance of Music 2000 years ago, writes, “Through foolishness they deceived themselves into thinking that there was no right or wrong in music -- that it was to be judged good or bad by the pleasure it gave. By their work and their theories they infected the masses with the presumption to think themselves adequate judges ... As it was, the criterion was not music, but a reputation for promiscuous cleverness and a spirit of law-breaking." He adds, "The introduction of a new kind of music must be shunned as imperiling the whole State: since styles of music are never disturbed without affecting the most important political institutions."
Some scientists, after extensive research work, have concluded that certain music compositions can in fact be dangerous and can affect our health, behavior and emotions. Studies also prove that with certain type of music, plants turn away, animals become disoriented and water crystals too turn to mud.

One thing that music does that cannot be ignored is it stimulates the brain, sometimes positively and sometimes negatively. Loudness, tempo of music, dissonance and tone quality are the main aspects of music that can affect us. It is for us to experiment with various kinds of music by various musicians and study the effects on our behavior, emotions and health to get the best out of it.

Blind and Beautiful!

Life was so simple and enjoyable, so were people. In daylight, gentle cool breeze of the winter, bringing in a profound voice calling ‘Sunaina’, was like splashing water on the dozing faces to make them alert. Some used to run for paper and pen to put in writing the tune, while others took pleasure in visualizing the loveliness of the nature, and the song.

This song was Composed and Written by Ravinder Jain, and sung by Yesudas. Ravinder jain was born blind. He was responsible for making this south Indian singing sensatiion Yesudas a household name in Hindi movies. It is said that Jain was so fascinated by the way Yesudas sang his songs that Yesudas' face was the first he wanted to see if he ever received his vision. Very touching line indeed.
Wish this song gives vision to those who have become sightless and blindly follow today's fake music!

Radio as Alarm

Those were the days when we used to wake up to the tunes of Noor Jahan, Shamshad Begum, Talat Mehmood, K L Saigal, Mukesh, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Manna dey, and Mohammed Rafi, as Radio Ceylon used to play old songs early in the morning. New songs were introduced only after 8.am. Most of us during that period were listening to the old and also the new, making ourselves comfortable with the past and also the present. Always listening to Healthy music brought a sense of Maturity and discipline within us. I would like to share a song from the film Anmol Ghadi, which was very popular and the most requested song of those days. It still sounds fabulous!
